“Ukraine Remains Committed To The Peaceful Settlement Of The Problem Of The Liberation Of The Occupied Territories”

The Head of State stressed that 20th February would remain in the history of Ukraine forever as a tragic day when the Heroes of Heavenly Hundred defended our right for the future. He reminded that the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine broke out on February 20.

“I think that it will be symbolically if today on February 20, we discuss along with you and I sign a very important Law – the Law “On peculiarities of the state policy on ensuring the state sovereignty of Ukraine in the temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions” – Petro Poroshenko noted.

The Head of State stressed on importance of this document: “This Law, on the one hand, reflects my strategy, as the President of Ukraine – Supreme Commander-in-Chief, on the returning of the occupied territories under the Ukrainian sovereignty. In this Law, we qualify the Russian state as an aggressor state. And this is enshrined at the legislative level. In this Law, it is legally determined that it was the Russian Federation that occupied our territories. This Law substantially strengthens the legal basis for the employment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other force structures for the defence of our state,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

“This Law fixes our right to self-defence in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter”, – Petro Poroshenko said, noting that in these circumstances, the leading role in rebuffing the Russian aggression falls on the shoulders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

He instructed Minister of Defence of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko to submit appropriate proposals for the change of format for the implementation of this Law, to propose the candidature of the Commander of the Joint Force, to submit proposals on the Regulations on the Joint Operational Headquarters, to submit the Strategic Intention on the employment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other forces, to ensure the subordination of the determined asserts to the Commander of the Joint Forces.

Signing the Law of Ukraine “On peculiarities of the state policy on ensuring the state sovereignty of Ukraine in the temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions”, Petro Poroshenko emphasized: “Ukraine remains committed to the peaceful settlement of the problem of the liberation of the occupied territories”.
