The DIU International Legion soldier Murray opened Wikipedia to read about Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the hetman who is named after the order awarded by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi for his services in the war against russian invaders.
The Legionnaire told Army TV about the details of the combat operation on the occupied left bank of the Dnipro River, for which Murray was honored, his journey from America to Ukraine, and the experience he gained during the years of full-scale war.
“During this time spent in Ukraine, I became a better person. Thanks to the experience I gained in Ukraine, I have become more focused and more determined.
Working in Ukraine is something I put my whole heart and soul into,” said Murray.
He also described his impressions of Ukrainians.
“I think Ukrainians are incredibly hospitable, educated and intelligent. [...] They are proud people who have a passion and love for their country. And this helps them do fantastic things,” said the Legionnaire.
He shared his plans: to stay in Ukraine, serve in the army, and buy a farm.
“I really like living closer to nature, a little further away from the city. Buying a small dacha or a small farm in the countryside, maybe somewhere in the south, closer to Kherson, would be ideal. I would really like to have a garden again, grow vegetables, have chickens,” he said.
Murray's girlfriend is from Kherson. She is now motivating him to write a book.
“My girlfriend constantly encourages me to write a book about my life here in Ukraine. Maybe after the war, I will find time for that. Yes, I plan to stay here. And part of my desire is to develop my career in the Ukrainian army. I want to be useful to the army,” the Legionnaire emphasized.
Murray is one of the heroes of the documentary One Summer in Ukraine.
The film, created by the Babylon'13 team, tells the story of foreign volunteers fighting on the side of Ukraine against the russian invaders.
The film is currently being shown in Ukrainian cinemas. All net proceeds from ticket sales will be used to purchase combat drones for the International Legion of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
