War&Sanctions: New “Geran” Modification Carries Both a MANPADS and a Warhead
January 12, 2026

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU), in the “Weapons Systems” category of the “Weapons Components” section on the War & Sanctions portal, has published an interactive diagram detailing the design, components, and electronic base of the Geran-2 UAV, series “E,” equipped with a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS).

In response to the effective operations of Ukraine’s Air Force and Army Aviation against hostile UAVs, russia continues to adapt its unmanned platforms to engage aerial targets.

Previously, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported the use of Geran-2 drones armed with the Soviet-era R-60 air-to-air missile. New findings now reveal details of another configuration — a drone equipped with the Verba MANPADS.

The employment of this modification requires manual, real-time control by an operator. For this purpose, the drone is fitted with a Chinese-made Honpho TS130C-01 optical camera installed in the nose cone, as well as an XK-F358 mesh modem manufactured by Xingkay Tech (PRC).

Once an aerial target is detected, the operator sequentially activates two servomechanisms. The first triggers the chemical battery and the nitrogen cooling system of the MANPADS seeker head. After the seeker cools to the required temperature, the second servomechanism opens a specially designed protective cover. The missile’s trigger is permanently fixed in the pressed position using cable ties, ensuring automatic launch immediately after the seeker locks onto the target.

A key distinction of this version compared to the R-60–armed modification is the presence of a full-scale primary warhead onboard the UAV itself. The examined specimen analyzed by DIU was fitted with a TBBCh-50M thermobaric warhead.

As a result, even after launching the anti-aircraft missile, the UAV retains its ability to carry out its primary strike mission. Targeting can also continue to be performed manually by the operator.

The set of onboard blocks and components remains typical for Geran UAVs, including a flight controller, inertial navigation system, 12-channel “Kometa” receiver, a tracker based on a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, and 3G/4G modems, among others.

Notably, the inertial navigation system was found to include a new six-axis inertial module, the SCH1633-D0I, produced by Murata (Japan). This module was introduced in late 2024 as a solution for civilian automotive applications, including autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance systems.

The remaining electronic components originate from the United States, China, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom. A complete list of components, including markings and photographic evidence, is available on the War & Sanctions portal.

The publication of this data aims to expose the technological supply chains sustaining russia’s military aggression and to support the strengthening of international sanctions pressure.
