WAR & SANCTIONS: DIU Publishes Data on Over 170 Stolen Ukrainian Cultural Artifacts, Including Items from the "Kamiana Mohyla" Museum
October 8, 2025

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, in the "Stolen Heritage" section of the War & Sanctions portal, has published detailed information on 178 Ukrainian cultural artifacts stolen by russian occupiers from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

Among the stolen items:

  • more than 140 artifacts were looted during illegal archaeological excavations in Crimea — at sites such as the Southern Suburb of the ancient city of Chersonesus Taurica, the Kadikivske fortress (a Roman military camp), and the Byzantine architectural monument Church of St. John the Baptist.
  • thirty-seven exhibits were taken from the National Historical and Archaeological Museum Kamiana Mohyla and transferred to the Chersonesus Taurica Museum under the pretext of a so-called "temporary exhibition" titled "The Spiritual World of Ancestors in the Petroglyphs of Kamiana Mohyla" in 2023.

Participants of the international War & Sanctions hackathon provided part of the published data.

By appropriating Ukrainian culture and history, russia seeks to erase Ukraine's national identity, justify its aggression, and legitimize the occupation of Ukrainian lands.

Documenting these crimes is the first step toward restoring justice and holding all perpetrators accountable.

Previously, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine published data on 110 cultural artifacts illegally excavated by russian occupiers in Crimea.
