War & Sanctions: Ukraine Exposes New List of russian Athletes Involved in Pro-Kremlin Propaganda
June 19, 2025
The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, has published another list of russian athletes, coaches, and officials on the War&Sanctions portal. These individuals actively participate in psychological operations against Ukraine, endorse the kremlin's aggressive policies, and yet remain integrated in the global sports arena.
Among those exposed:
- Yana Yegoryan – Olympic fencer and lieutenant in the russian Armed Forces. She serves as vice president of the moscow Regional Fencing Federation and represents the russian Defense Ministry's CSKA sports club. Yegoryan is also an ambassador of the "Healthy Motherland" patriotic movement, which operates even in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
- Alina Zagitova – Olympic figure skater, now a reporter and TV host on russia's state-run Channel One. She is also a brand ambassador for the oil company Tatneft. Zagitova publicly supported constitutional changes allowing putin to extend his presidency and voiced support for his 2024 re-election bid. She has visited russian-occupied Crimea.
- Kliment Kolesnikov – Competitive swimmer and senior instructor for physical training in the National Guard's Central District command. He holds a military rank and continues to represent russia internationally.
- Yevgeny Baidusov – Greco-Roman wrestler, a participant in the 2023 CIS Games and the 2025 European Wrestling Championships in Albania. A member of russia's national wrestling team, Baidusov has repeatedly used the pro-invasion "Z" symbol and publicly claimed that Simferopol and Crimea are russian territories.
- Aram Grigoryan – a member of the russian judo national team. He belongs to the Dynamo sports club, known for ties to russia's security services, and has taken part in fundraising campaigns for russian military units.
- Ilya Burov is an Olympic freestyle skier and an enlisted serviceman in CSKA Sevastopol. He openly displays pro-kremlin patriotic symbols and supports the russian government's so-called fight "against Nazism." He has also called for the "defense of russian-speaking populations."
Despite their direct ties to russia's armed forces and their involvement in pro-war propaganda, these individuals remain active in the international sports system.
The DIU and Ukraine's Ministry of Youth and Sports call on the international sporting community to take firm action:
- Ban all russian athletes from international competitions — including those competing under a "neutral" flag;
- Expel russian representatives from global sports federations;
- End any cooperation with russian sporting structures or personnel.
