russian orthodox church Appoints New Curators for Activities in Ukraine
April 29, 2025

The government of the aggressor state continues its efforts to destabilize Ukrainian society. To advance its political agenda in Ukraine, the kremlin has appointed new representatives of the russian orthodox church (ROC) to promote the ideology of the "russian world" under the guise of religious engagement.

The newly appointed curators include:

  • metropolitan antoniy (anton yurievich sevryuk) – Head of the ROC's Department for External Church Relations and a close associate of patriarch kirill. He has broad ties in international religious circles and actively promotes kremlin political goals through church diplomacy.
  • metropolitan dionisiy (pyotr nikolayevich porubay) – metropolitan of omsk and tavria, a vocal propagandist for kremlin ideology and the "russian world" narrative.
  • metropolitan pavel (georgiy vasilievich ponomaryov) – patriarchal exarch of the moscow metropolis, overseeing russian church operations in neighboring post-Soviet states.
  • metropolitan varsonofiy (anatoliy vladimirovich sudakov) – Head of the saint petersburg metropolis, with close ties to russian security agencies. He plays an active role in implementing propaganda efforts disguised as religious outreach.

The task of these so-called clerics is to organize and coordinate communication with religious organizations tied to the aggressor state, as well as pro-russian actors within Ukraine. Their responsibilities include transmitting instructions from russian intelligence services and overseeing provocations aligned with kremlin interests.

Under the banner of "religious cooperation," the russian orthodox church continues to serve as an instrument of russia's hybrid warfare strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine.
