Toxic Fiction: kremlin Tries to Pin Radioactive Scandal on Ukraine in Syria
July 10, 2025

russian intelligence services have launched yet another clumsy disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Ukraine.

In Syria, local sources are spreading a false narrative about the alleged sale of "military equipment" supposedly acquired from Ukraine's Ministry of Defense.

The fabricated "equipment" is a poorly assembled container holding capsules labeled "PU.94244U" (plutonium) and "U.92" (uranium). The capsules' actual contents are unknown.

As usual with russian propaganda, the fake container is shoddily made: garbled Cyrillic text, a blue tape crudely attaching a fake logo of Ukraine's Defense Ministry, and blatant labeling errors. One capsule is marked as "PU 94244U" — a rare isotope of plutonium of which only a few grams exist in the Earth's crust. Strangely, the container also includes a mechanical wristwatch.

russia is also reportedly trying to sell a Soviet-era chemical reconnaissance device, claiming it was "purchased from Ukrainian Defense Ministry representatives involved in radiation, chemical, and biological protection activities in Syria."

The video promoting this hoax includes a date in Arabic: "March 13, 2025 – Thursday."

It is not the kremlin's first attempt to spread such disinformation. Back in 2023, a user blog post under the name "smoug1985" described a "Ukrainian plutonium container" allegedly intercepted by russian forces, claiming they had thwarted a U.S. attempt to accuse russia of using chemical weapons in Syria.

"This is a clear attempt by the kemlin to damage Ukraine's reputation ahead of diplomatic engagement with the new Syrian leadership, Ukraine's international partners, and the IAEA," said Andrii Yusov, spokesperson for the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU).

"The aggressor state continues to manipulate the issue of global nuclear safety, and the free world must respond firmly."

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine is actively monitoring hostile disinformation activities orchestrated by russian intelligence services.
