In an exclusive interview with Kyiv Post, Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, shared insights into the evolving partnership between Ukraine and the United States and offered his outlook on its future.
Despite various challenges, Budanov noted that Ukraine has succeeded in finding common ground with the United States.
"Another point is that we can and must influence the decisions of the US president – through diplomacy, through contacts within his circle," he said. "And this is exactly what has affected the evolution of his position on aid to Ukraine. Recently, a balance has been found between the interests of Ukraine and the US."
A key player in this process has been U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg. According to Budanov, Kellogg was among the first to advocate for providing Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, ATACMS and Patriot systems, and interceptor missiles.
"This will help protect thousands of Ukrainians – primarily civilians," Budanov emphasized. "He clearly states that aid to Ukraine fully aligns with the principle of 'America First.' And for America, it is strategically important today to weaken russia without deploying its troops."
Budanov also expressed confidence in the enduring nature of the strategic partnership between Kyiv and Washington.
"I have never lost optimism on this matter. America is our friend. Yes, our relationship is not always easy. But in the end, we always find common ground," he said.
