russia Initiates Informal Meeting of the UN Security Council to Voice "Fresh Ideas" Regarding War in Ukraine

December 27, 2023

On December 27, russia plans to hold an informal meeting of the UN Security Council under the so-called "Arria Formula". The announced title of the event is "Ten years of Euromaidan in Ukraine: a step into the abyss".

"The Arria Formula" is a format of informal meetings where representatives of countries can exchange views. Such meetings involve participants who are not involved in diplomatic work. That is, people "who would be useful to listen to". At the same time, this format can be useful when diplomats need to discuss controversial issues frankly outside of official procedures.

During the meeting, the russians will once again try to "convey" to the audience the traditional narratives about the "neo-Nazi nature of the Kyiv regime and its armed forces". Other topics to be discussed include: "the history of Nazism in Ukraine and its current state", "crimes of nationalist battalions against civilians in eastern and southern Ukraine".

The document submitted to the UN Secretary-General also contains no "fresh" ideas and repeats traditional russian propaganda wording. The central message of the "presentation" is "inspiration of Euromaidan by Western countries and the United States". Accordingly, the war is justified by plans to "protect civilians in eastern and southern Ukraine".

This time, however, the russians offered some "know-how." The invited guests "whom it would be useful to hear" at the meeting are vitalii zakharchenko, the minister of internal affairs of the yanukovych era, dmytro sabin, one of the Berkut commanders, as well as russian propagandists maksym grygoriev and mykhailo khazin. The meeting will be chaired by vasyl nebenzia, the permanent representative of the russian federation to the United Nations.

In general, the interest in the announced event on the part of the UN Security Council members is extremely low. Most of them will be represented by so-called "experts". That is, advisers or second secretaries. They are not in the mood to "listen to zakharchenko in a useful way", instead they intend to express the position of their states on the "real state of affairs".

It seems that the event itself is designed mainly for the "domestic" russian audience, as the interest of the international media is practically zero. It is planned to be broadcast only on some websites and social networks.

russian diplomacy is finally turning into a generator of crazy ideas that no one in the world takes seriously. The meeting is apparently part of the program of putin's "elections" scheduled for March 2024. According to russian propagandists, it will be useful for the electorate to know that the theses justifying the war in Ukraine will be presented at the UN. And the "intimate" informal status will allow to get rid of caustic comments from international diplomats about the latest nonsense about "fighting mosquitoes" and "American biolabs".
