On the Day of Remembrance of Defenders who died in the struggle for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with members of families of fallen servicemen.

The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Head of the President’s Office Andrii Yermak and government representatives.

“I want to thank you for the meeting. On this tragic day, we meet with the families of fallen defenders. I express great respect and gratitude to you, all relatives and friends of those who gave their lives for Ukraine,” the Head of State said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyi stressed the extremely great contribution of fallen servicemen to preserving the independence of our state. “Great people gave their lives for children and grandchildren, the next generations to celebrate the independence and inviolability of Ukraine,” he added.

The President of Ukraine noted that such meetings should be held annually to understand what problems the families of fallen defenders of Ukraine have and how the state should solve them.

Volodymyr Zelenskyi also stressed that during 2021-2022 it is necessary to resolve the issue of the queue for housing for the families of participants of hostilities in eastern Ukraine and veterans.

“Our task is to close the entire queue for housing compensation for the families of the dead and veterans during the rest of this year and 2022,” the Head of State said.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the issue of legislative consolidation of the status of defenders of Ukraine. In particular, they touched upon the issue of social guarantees, which need to be defined in a separate law.
