The approach of winter frosts complicates the carefree life of numerous cats and kittens living on Zmiinyi Island. Therefore, the fighters of the DIUs' Timur special forces unit, who were patrolling the island, decided to do an important job - evacuate 15 animals from the island.

The cats were carefully brought to one of the largest animal shelters in Ukraine - Sirius. The rescue operation was supported by the MacPaw Foundation.

Everyone now has the opportunity to adopt one of the rescued cats at the Sirius shelter.

It is not the first time that soldiers of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian charitable foundations have rescued animals during the war.

During a combat operation in the Kharkiv region this year, soldiers of the 92nd Air Assault Brigade found hungry owls locked in a cage in a destroyed house. The birds were rescued and handed over to the Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov. The head of the intelligence service is known to be fond of animals: he has cats Gunter and Zmii, frog Petro, and canaries.

In April 2022, after the Kyiv region de-occupation, MacPaw Foundation volunteers were the first to bring food and everything necessary for animal care to the Sirius shelter.
