"We Must Write Our History": DIU Legionnaire on the Making of the Film Killhouse
June 16, 2025

Volodymyr, a representative of the International Legion of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, has shared exclusive behind-the-scenes details about the production of the thriller film Killhouse, based on a real-life special operation during russia's war against Ukraine. He spoke with journalist Jenny Klochko on the podcast Ukrainian Jenny Meets.

According to Volodymyr, 90% of the cast are active-duty soldiers — including DIU legionnaires — who portray themselves on screen.

"One of the reasons we must create media and make films is to write our own story — for the future," he said.

He emphasized that preserving history through cinema is vital for future generations of freedom fighters and defenders of justice.

"I understand that making films, whether fictional or documentary-like One Summer in Ukraine, The White Raven about a Ukrainian sniper, or Killhouse, which Liubomyr Levytskyi is currently directing — is like taking a snapshot of what's happening now. In 10, 12, or 15 years, young men — the next generation — can watch these films. They won't learn every detail of each battle or campaign — they'll need to read history books. But they will feel the emotion."

More insights from the set and stories from the combat path of DIU's International Legion and its foreign volunteer fighters are available in the full interview with Volodymyr.
