‘Magura V5’ Drones ― How Sea Hunters For russian Ships Were Created
March 4, 2024

Ukrainska Pravda posted an article about the creation of ‘Magura V5’ marine strike drones and unknown episodes of special operations to destroy russian ships with this technological weapon.

In the autumn of 2022, the head of the Unmanned Systems unit of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, a general with the codename Borets, and his team arrived at a designated location near the river at the invitation of the developers of marine drones.

“They showed us what their product could do. We evaluated it, and everything looked very promising: in this one device, we could see the realisation of the technological capabilities of the 21st century,” said Borets.

This was followed by a period of refinement and production debugging, and in May 2023, ‘Magura V5’ drone operators tracked down their first major target, the russian reconnaissance warship ‘ivan khurs’. The crew of the enemy vessel attempted to repel the attack.

“We met him around half past one in the morning, and he was shooting back until about seven in the morning. While we were chasing him, some of the drones ran out of fuel because the distances are so long. Some drones were damaged. But we managed to get to him,” the general said.

After the ‘Khurs’, operators of marine drones of Ukrainian military intelligence managed to hit the patrol warship ‘siergiei kotov’, to destroy two fast landing vessels ‘akula’ and ‘serna’, the missile ship ‘ivanoviets’ and the large-size landing warship ‘caesar kunikov’.

According to the developers of the ‘Magura V5’, this model of maritime strike drones was created specially for hunting warships at sea, so it is smaller, faster and much more manoeuvrable than other similar drones.

“We follow the way to search for and destroy warships. This is our choice, we are developing this method. Constant patrolling is not our thing. We work on a point-by-point basis. We decided that we would work exclusively on warships,” explained Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
