In the last battle, his unit neutralised three enemy TU-22 aircraft that were bombing Ukraine
To destroy the russian bombers, Ukrainian intelligence men covered more than 600 kilometres on foot through enemy territory.
They were given an extremely important task – to stop numerous air strikes on peaceful cities in Ukraine. The task was completed. However, for Oleh Babii, the commander who covered the retreat of his subordinate personnel, it turned out to be the last one.
Colonel Oleh Babii, Hero of Ukraine, was an intelligence officer who took an active part in the destruction of the russian occupation forces since the beginning of the war.
Since the first days of the large-scale russian invasion, he organised and carried out special operations in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, as well as on the enemy’s territory, which actually changed the course of this war.
On his account – nine successful reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines, 12 special arrangements regarding organising and supporting the resistance movement in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and behind enemy lines. Up to 70 important strategic enemy targets were identified: command posts, military equipment, engineering and fortification equipment, etc. Information about them was used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to plan operations on liberation the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and to strike important enemy targets.
Thanks to the successful completion of the tasks by Colonel Babii’s group, it was possible to disorganise the occupants’ logistics, destroy its important facilities and elements of critical infrastructure. Entire units of the russian occupation forces lost their combat capability, command and control system by troops and weapons, suffered communication disruption, and thus lost efficiency in their interaction with their rear.
The last successfully completed task by Oleh Babii’s reconnaissance group – the destruction and disabling of three russian TU-22M3 bombers, which significantly disrupted the plans of the military and political leadership of the russian federation to launch missile strikes on the territory of Ukraine and actually completely destabilised the operation of airfields and long-range aviation base points.
Obviously, this caused considerable economic losses to the aggressor country and provoked panic among the local population and the russian servicemen, as the forces and means of the russian special services were dispersed. And we should not forget about another thing – the damage to the image of the so-called “invincibility” of the russian army and the “heroism” of its military and political leadership.
It was August 2023. As a member of a reconnaissance group, Oleh Babii walked more than 600 km through enemy territory to perform a special combat mission – to stop terrorist air bombardments by the russians of peaceful Ukrainian cities.
Having penetrated deep into the enemy’s rear, the intelligence officers completed the task – they destroyed a russian TU-22M3 bomber and disabled two more, but also suffered irreparable losses. Returning to Ukraine-controlled territory, Colonel Oleh Babii’s reconnaissance group was ambushed and engaged in an unequal battle with the russian invaders.
On August 30, 2023, in this battle, while covering the retreat of his combat sworn brothers, Ukrainian intelligence officer Lieutenant Colonel Oleh Babii was mortally wounded and perished.
For his heroic deeds, Oleh Babii was posthumously awarded with the “Golden Star” Order of Hero of Ukraine.
The Hero left wife and two young children. The youngest daughter was only one year old at the time of her father’s death.
